Four Police posts valued at Rwf70 million were inaugurated yesterday in Kirehe District.
The official opening of the posts built by Kirehe District was part of activities to mark the 20th liberation and Rwanda National Police (RNP) 14th anniversaries which started on Monday.
The police posts were constructed in the sectors of Gahara, Mahama, Mpanga and Kigarama. Kirehe becomes the first district to build Police posts to strengthen security measures in the district.
During the exercise, RNP also gave out medical insurance cards to one hundred families (500 people) and seven cows as part of efforts to support health development and poverty eradication in the area.
Jean Bosco Ndagijimana, one of the beneficiaries of the heifer thanked Police for fulfilling his dream.
Police also awarded one Elie Uwizeyimana and The Vision Club, a local cultural troup with Rwf200, 000 each for composing the best community policing poem and song respectively.
Residents of Mushikiri Sector also handed a motorcycle to their community policing committee. The motorcycle was bought out of their contribution to support community night patrols in their area.
Protais Murayire, the district Mayor said the partnership with RNP had helped reduce crime in the area.
The district, he added, established 46 anti-crime clubs in schools and established a hotline - 4137 - for easy and timely reporting of crimes.
Alvera Mukabaramba, the Minister of State for Local Government who presided over the event appealed to residents to double their effort in maintaining security, which she said is a pillar to development.
The Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel K. Gasana also called on Rwandans to play a greater role in the fight against crime.
"Village is the foundation for sustainable security. We have to build further on what has so far been achieved,” he said.
Gasana pledged a motorcycle to Gahara Sector. The event was also attended by the Governor of the Eastern Province, Odette Uwamariya, senior police and military officers and district mayors and hundreds of area residents, among others.
