Rwandans, Ugandans and Kenyans are reaping high in the newly launched use of National Identity /voters/student cards as a travel document within the three countries.

Travelers, traders, students and others travelling within 3 Partner States no longer have to worry carrying their passports and spending much time at the borders or airports lining up for clearing. The use of IDs takes seconds for a passenger to cross and this has facilitated the easy movement of imports and exports especially 

The ID initiative intends to facilitate free movement of people within the region as a provision for the East African Common Market Protocol, the Second stage of the integration process

The use of IDs commenced on 1 January 2014, but was officially launched by the three Heads of State on 20th February in Kampala during the fourth EAC Integration Projects Summit. President Paul Kagame and his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta both travelled to attend the summit in Uganda using their national identity cards.
