Rwanda national rugby team Silverback were on Saturday crowned champions of the Confederation of Africa Rugby Div. 2 15s tournament held at Amahoro stadium.

Hosts Rwanda lost the second game on Saturday against DR Congo 9-5 but still qualified for Division Three with five points, thanks to their 16-6 win over Burundi in the first game on Tuesday.

Congo had also beaten Burundi in their first game 22-12 on Thursday but points were later awarded to the Burundi because the  Congolese didn’t have a full team of 15 players on the field as some of their players had not yet arrived for the tournament.

On Saturday, Congo scored three penalties, while Rwanda’s try was made by the team captain Vincent Kamali.

All the teams got four points for one win each, but Rwanda was awarded a bonus point for losing with less than seven points as the tournament rules stipulate. Rwanda will now join Ethiopia, Gabon and Cameroon in Division Three.

Rwanda’s head coach Ismail Mocevakaca admitted that his players were a bit complacent against Congo which led to the defeat.

"We have been practicing how to take penalties but that has failed throughout the tournament. My players were only scoring tries but I am happy that we have qualified to Division 3,” noted the Fijian.
