The Rwanda National Police (RNP) will today launch countrywide ‘Police Week’ activities in line with the 20th liberation celebrations "Kwibohora 20.”

Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police Damas Gatare said the activities will focus on "20 years of Policing a People – Making Rwandans Feel Safe, Involved and Reassured.”

The week-long exercise also coincides with the celebrations to mark the RNP 14th anniversary.

The RNP was formed in June 2000 after merging Gendarmerie Nationale, which was under the Ministry of Defense, the Communal Police under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Judicial Police under the Ministry of Justice.

"The official launch will be in Karongi District of Western Province today and will focus on the Rwanda National Police achievements in contributing to health and medical services especially offered by Isange One-Stop Centres and Kacyiru Police Hospital,” ACP Gatare said.

On the second day, he added, the exercise will focus on providing shelter to five vulnerable genocide survivors’ families constructed by RNP in Nyanza District as the force’s support towards "poverty alleviation and enhancing human security.”

"On June 11, the campaign will focus on crime prevention and promoting the Police-Public partnership in reinforcing safety through community policing and the official launch for this particular exercise will be held in Musanze District,” he explained.

The activities to be conducted on June 12 will include inaugurating a police post facility constructed by Kirehe District.

The activities will end in Kigali with the launch of the ‘Police Book,’ exhibition and awarding districts that excelled in areas of crime prevention as per the RNP-District Memorandum of Understanding.

One overall best district from each of the four provinces and the City of Kigali will be awarded a vehicle courtesy of Rwanda National Police.

The RNP signed agreements with all the thirty districts in the country to partner in crime prevention and human security among others.
