GAKENKE - About 12 people were killed in a horrific road accident yesterday when a taxi they were traveling in overturned along the Musanze-Kigali road, according to the head of traffic in the national police, Robert Niyonshuti.

According to eyewitnesses on the scene of the accident, all the victims were going for a wedding.

The horrific accident occurred at Cyintama near Buranga in Gakenke district Northern Province. An eye witness said the omnibus RAA 063U overturned at around 11.30 am.

Niyonshuti said that the vehicle failed to break due to poor mechanical condition.

Volunteers had to cut through the wreckage to remove the mangled bodies. All the bodies were taken to Nemba hospital.

He called upon all motorists to always check their vehicles for any faults. He also urged motorists to always take their vehicles for inspection at the control center for inspection.
"Motorists should always put in original spare parts and follow road rules”

Niyonshuti told Sunday Times that generally the situation on the county’s roads is not very alarming and not many accidents have happened on the country’s roads.
