THIS YEAR’S Gisembe memorial basketball tournament kicks-off today at different courts in Kigali.

The tournament will include two competitions; one for only local teams and the other for local and regional clubs in both men and women categories.

The local competition takes place this weekend, while the ‘international’ will be held on the weekend of June 13-15.

The annual tournament is organised by league side Espoir in conjunction with the Rwanda Basketball Federation in honor of victims of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.

The tournament is named after former national team and Espoir star player, Emmanuel Ntarugera aka Gisembe who also died in the Genocide.

The local tournament will see all league teams (men and women) competing, while the international will comprise the best three teams from the local tournament in each category plus guest teams from Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and DR Congo.

Regional teams that have confirmed participation include; the men’s title holders, Urunani and Muzinga, Belco Stars (all Burundi), Uganda’s Warriors, City Oil (men) and Magic Stormers (women).

Others are; DR Congo’s PGB (men and women), Ulinzi (men) and Equity Bank (women) from Kenya.

Rwanda’s Ubumwe basketball club is the defending champions in the women’s category.
