Dear doctor;

I am a single father and currently dreading for the day my 13-year-old daughter will approach her menstruation. Is there a particular way I can start preparing her for the life stage. Confused Father.

Dear Confused Father,

You need not worry. Your daughter may have been informed about forthcoming menstruation and puberty changes in school. Otherwise, she can be explained in a simple language that her body is being prepared to become an adult. This occurs due to hormonal changes which cause flow of blood for some days every month. She need not be worried about it. She should be explained about the need of using sanitary towels and maintain good hygiene during this period. What is more important for her to understand is that in a short time   from now onwards she is prone to become pregnant after any sexual encounter. Hence, she needs to be informed and be  vigilant on this account. Any well-wishing female relative or friend can also help you through this ordeal by explaining things to your daughter.
