RWANDA’s top-ranked tennis player, Jean Claude Gasigwa is targeting to win this year’s Kenya Open tennis championship set for June 15-22 in Nairobi.
Gasigwa will be looking to make one step higher and win the international tournament after losing in last year’s final to Ugandan archrival and two-time winner Duncan Mugabe.
Gasigwa who teamed up with Zambia’s Edgar Kazembe in the doubles final lost to Mugabe, who teamed up with country mate David Oringa.
Gasigwa, 32, is undergoing intensive preparations at his Rugunga-based Cercle Sportif de Kigali.
"Preparations are going well; I have been training for some time. After reaching the final of last year’s edition, my target is to win the tournament this time round.
"I have enough experience in this competition and I hope if all goes well, I can clinch it for my first time,” Gasigwa told Times Sport on Wednesday.
Gasigwa, who reached the competition’s final twice in 2008 and 2013 respectively, will be hoping to do better this time around.
Other Rwandan tennis players who have confirmed their participation include; Rwanda’s number two Dieudonne Habiyambere, third-ranked Olivier Nkunda, fifth-seeded Mathew Uwizeyimana. Megan Ingabire will be the only female Rwandan in the contest.
