Hasina Uwimana, a resident of Kimbazi village, Ntunga Cell was strangled to death and her body was discovered by neighbours.
Fabrice Nizeyimana had initially pleaded for a lesser sentence, but refused to reveal his accomplices, prompting the court to reject his plea.
According to the judges, Nizeyimana, 22, was found guilty of strangling Uwineza, 15 at her father’s house last month.
"The loss and grief that family has experienced is immeasurable. The defendant’s criminal actions deprived them of their precious daughter,” the judge ruled.
The verdict was read at the same place where the crime and trial took place. The court decided to move to the area where the crime was committed to ensure that the people see justice being served.
The mother of the deceased, Francoise Gasengayire, said her daughter’s murder was a terrible loss to the family.
"When I got to the house I saw my child lying dead. It was a pathetic scene that I will live to remember,” Gasengayire said.
