GABORONE – SIXTEEN-YEAR OLD Clementine Niyonsaba was the best placed runner as she finished sixth in the 10.4km Individual Time Trial race held yesterday in Gaborone.

Rwanda fielded two cyclists in both boys and girls category. Niyonsaba clocked 17 minutes, 16 seconds and seven micro seconds to come behind Michelle Benson from South Africa who won the race in 15:18:7.

Benitha Uwamarayika finished 10th among 16 participants. She clocked 18:04:6. Ebtissam Zayed from Egypt and Sylvia Odom from Nigeria settled for silver and bronze medal positions. 

In the boys’ category, Joseph Areruya finished 13th out of 35 cyclists, clocking 30 minutes, two seconds and sixty three micro seconds in the 20.8km race. 

His counterpart Ephrem Tuyishimire finished 19th in 31:39:69. South Africans swept the first two spots with Stefan De Bod winning gold while Ivan Venter secured silver with bronze going to Algeria’s Salim Keddah. 

Cyclists will hope to register good performances in Thursday’s road race where boys will ride 104km with girls competing 52km.

Volleyball

Paul Bitok’s side extended their winning spree beating Mauritius 3-0 (25-13, 25-11 and 25-12). They now have ten points in four matches and will face Nigeria today afternoon before winding up their tournament against Egypt on Friday. 

Tennis

Ernest Habiyambere and Olive Tuyisenge were knocked out in the singles tournament. Habiyambere lost to Auda Amin from Morocco 6-2 6-3 while Tuyisenge failed to overcome Nicole Zenga from Zimbabwe 6-0 6-0. 

In doubles, Habiyambere who partnered with Burundian Ntamba Radjabu lost to Lesotho pair of Lebelo Mosehle and Kukutla Motlojoa 6-3 6-4. 

Tuyisenge and Burundian Mariam Mujawimana sailed through to the quarter finals after beating Botswana pair of Nthabiseng Mogopodi and Botho Tawana 6-0 6-2. 

Tuyisenge and Mujawimana face Egyptian pair of Habiba Lasheen and Sandra Samir in today’s quarter final round match.
