Can breastfeeding help me against pregnancy?

Dear doctor; I am a 30-year-old woman with a six-month-old baby. I am reluctant to use injections or pills because I have heard people say they have side effects. I have however been told that breastfeeding can help prevent pregnancy. Is this true that once am breastfeeding I cannot conceive?

Dear doctor;

Maria.

Dear Maria,

Breastfeeding indeed does prevent pregnancy if done correctly and regularly due to high levels of prolactin (milk producing hormone) being produced in the body. But gradually over weeks to months its level starts declining, thus exposing the woman to risk of pregnancy. After about six months or so, it may no longer prevent pregnancy. This duration is variable among different women. It is better for you to consider other options of family planning. There are side effects of pills or injections but overall they are very safe and effective. You can discuss with a health care provider as to what method of contraception would be best for you.
