A rural cooperative is in dire need of assistance. Tuzamukane Food Cooperative in Nyamata, Bugesera District, is seeking technical assistance to make it realize its objectives of producing enough food for district consumption and the country as a whole.

With over 100 members, Tuzamukane dabbles in fish farming, cabbage, carrot and tomato growing, and rice production. Seeing its seriousness of purpose, the district authorities donated 50 hectares of land for rice production. But alas, rice growing has not even taken off despite the availability of land.

Both Emilien Nyirandabaruta, cooperative leader, and Evariste Nzirabatware, self-styled cooperative agronomist, think the cooperative can produce about 350 tonnes of rice per season, if they got technical help on how to grow the rice and manage their drainage system well, in addition to handling the other agricultural projects.

We amplify the cooperative’s call for technical assistance.

Many areas and people striving to eradicate poverty and grow their home incomes as well as achieve food security, still find it difficult to group themselves into societies or cooperatives, which would make it easier to solicit for assistance.

Tuzamukane is already a cooperative, and what makes it more serious is that they want people with the expertise to point a helping and knowledgeable hand.

They sure would do with some financial assistance as well, but their most pressing need is for people who know a bit of modern farming, to work with them and show them what to do.

There are many, many volunteers who flock to Rwanda to help people pick up their lives.

This is a great opportunity to help out with your skills, as the government, which has already started taking note of these people’s capabilities, looks into ways of how best to help them more.

But as is well known, getting enough human resource to work in all sectors is this government’s priority; so the ball really is back to volunteers and other civil and non-government organizations to help out this struggling but determined cooperative.
