Rwanda National Police on May 22, received a vehicle intercepted by Interpol Uganda in Kampala.

The truck, a Mercedes Benz type belonging to a local businessman Gerald Bizimungu, was stolen from Rwanda early last year.

Interpol Uganda handed it over to RNP who also handed it over to the owner.

Chief Supt. Jean Nepo Mbonyumuvunyi, Director of Interpol in Rwanda National Police said upon receiving information about the theft, they informed their counterparts in Uganda, where it was suspected to be and it was later intercepted in Kampala.

CSP Mbonyumuvunyi, who handed the vehicle to the owner, called upon the public and businesses in particular to always keep addresses of people they transact with to help trace them in case of such incidences.

Bizimungu explained that his truck had been hired by a fellow businessman (name withheld), in April last year for business purposes.

However, the businessman, who is currently in custody, allegedly forged the vehicle’s documents and sold it in Uganda.

"I was later informed by my friends in Uganda that my truck had been sold and I reported to the Police, which helped me to recover it,” Bizimungu said.

It is alleged that the truck had been sold at $35,000, approximately Rwf24 million.

Bizimungu said the theft cost him over Rwf30 million in losses.

"I am happy that I have got my vehicle back and I thank both Rwanda and Uganda police forces for the effort,” Bizimungu said.
