It is through films that stories are told, people are inspired and lives are celebrated. Growing up, most of us were under the belief that movies worth watching all came from Hollywood and limited our own actors to stage plays and the like.

But that is not how Cine Femme, an association of Rwandan women filmmakers, plans to make history. With five of their films featuring in the Zanzibar Film Festival scheduled in June this year, it is safe to say that Rwandan women refuse to take the back seat in directing and will strive regardless of the obstacles that come their way. The group shared with Patrick Buchana their dreams, goals, aspirations and struggles in an art that is relatively new to the country but bears big opportunities.
