BURUNDIAN tactician Godfrey Okoko is relieved after helping the Southern Province-based Amagaju FC to avoid relegation on the last day of the season.
A 2-1 win over Etincelles away in Rubavu last weekend, gave Amagaju another chance to stay in the top flight league.
The team spent the whole season rotating in the relegation zone and before their final match of the season; they were placed 12th with 20 points.
However, they had shown signs of escaping the red zone as they thrashed Mukura 4-1 at home in Nyamagabe to boost their chances.
"We did it, we have managed to stay up, and I know many people were surprised because we had been placed bottom of the standings for the entire season but we managed to escape being demoted to second division,” Okoko told Times Sport before adding: "We had a very poor season, we didn’t play to our best but having been able to stay put in the top flight league, we are going to prepare very well such that next season finds us in a more serious mood.”
Amagaju finished the 2013/14 season, in 11th position with 23 points in 26 matches played this season. They won six games, registered five draws and lost 15 games, all together.
Esperance and AS Muhanga who finished bottom of the standings with 21 and 18 points respectively were relegated to second division league.
