Police in Rwamagana District have arrested a 39-year-old for allegedly defiling a seven-year-old girl.

The suspect, a resident of Muhazi Sector, had reportedly invited the victim under the pretext of giving her a certain task.

"We have arrested the suspect while the victim is under medical examination. Investigations are ongoing as we await full medical report,” Eastern region police spokesman, Senior Superintendant Benoit Nsengiyumva, said.

He said the suspect would be charged with defilement and sexual abuse.

Agnes Mukamwezi , an area resident, said the suspect lured the child into a nearby beans garden, rubbed sand in her eyes and ears, and gagged her mouth before defiling her.

"The victim sustained injuries in her private parts and is undergoing treatment at Rwamagana Hospital,” she said.

She added that the suspect lured the young girl with gifts.

"Strange things do happen in this area. We are sick and tired of what is happening to our children,” said another neighbour.
