Refer to the story, "JB Habyarimana, the Butare prefect who bravely resisted the Genocide” (The New Times, May 1). "This is a sad story but I thank The New Times for telling us the tragic fate of that courageous man.

Jean-Baptiste Habyarimana was indeed a brave man who stood against the evil; he was one in a million, he stood out of the crowd and tried to make a difference.

Thanks to his actions, he knew that one day he would be killed, but he risked his all to give fellow Tutsi in Butare at least a few more days to live while killers were on rampage in other parts of the country.

He paid this by his own life and the gruesome death of his family.

Such stories remind us to closely examine ourselves, to examine what we are doing and ask ourselves: How shall we be remembered in the coming decades? How will history judge us?

We should all think twice.
