THE 2012 London Olympian Alphonse Agahozo snatched a bronze medal to help Team Rwanda finish tenth at the just concluded African Zone 3&4 Championships held in Kampala, Uganda.
Team Rwanda, which comprised of 14 swimmers including nine boys and six girls, had a disappointing outing after amassing just 283 points and winning one medal.
Agahozo finished third in the 100m breaststroke clocking one minute, 25 seconds and 20 micro seconds to come behind joint winners Nadia Blaauw of South Africa and Luindia Kamavo of Angola who clocked 1 minute, 23 seconds and 20 microseconds. Agahozo also staged an impressive performance in the 200m breaststroke finishing fourth in 3.17.40. The top male swimmer and two-time Olympian Jackson Niyomugabo finished ninth in the 400m freestyle clocking 5:18.30. Hosts Uganda won 14 gold, 9 silver and 8 bronze medals to finish sixth place with Kenya collecting 2,676.5 points in first place followed by South Africa on 2,186. Zambia, with 2,153 points completed the podium followed by Angola and Mauritius.
Other countries included; Tanzania (1,276.5 pts), Malawi (590), Burundi (322) and Seychelles (158).
