The law society last week paid tribute to colleagues who perished in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi

"We want to take this time and remember 15 (known so far) of our colleagues who were not only killed because of their ethnicity but because they stood against a genocidal system,” Anita Mugeni, the dean of the Rwanda Bar Association, said.

Victor Mugabe, the executive secretary of the Rwanda Bar Association, said paying tribute to the departed colleagues does not only bring them together as a fraternity, but also strengthen their resolve to fight crimes against humanity.

"We provide university education scholarships to at least seven survivors of the Genocide every year. We have also donated 10 hybrid cows to survivors in Nyanza District since 2011,” Mugabe said.

Ignace Ruzindana, also a member of the association, commended government for creating an environment that promotes the independence of the judiciary.

"Before 1994, there was no association like this. Lawyers practically didn’t have a voice,” he said.
