This weekend, Rwandans and friends of Rwanda all over the world will mark the 20th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi through dance at an event dubbed, Kurema: Moving at the speed of peace.  

The global event that was organised in precisely one week brings together dancers, dance teachers and students from around the world to advocate for peace in Africa in a positive way through dance.

According to Rebbeca Davis Dance Company (RDDC), the company organising the event, numerous people from all across the world have joined the movement by offering a dance class in which they will hold a minute of silence for the victims of the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda and share their passion for a bright future.

The event is a fusion of genocide prevention which takes place in April and National Dance Week that is marked every April 25 to May 4 in the United States.

In order to engage artists during this important month, the organisers wanted to ‘create’ an international and interactive event, hence the Kinyrwanda word, kurema, which means "create”. 

Registration for the event is still ongoing for dancers or dance teachers and other participants for the Saturday class on kurema.org.
