Reference is made to Lonzen Rugira’s article, "Why historical clarity is important in the quest for the dignity of the African” (The New Times, April 21).

I strongly agree with Mr Rugira about the involvement of Western powers in African matters. But I wish he had also touched on the African leaders' responsibility in the misery of their fellow citizens.

In most of the cases, whoever comes to power – whether by elections, putsch or by gun – receives the sponsorship of the USA, UK, Belgium, Germany, France, Canada, and so on. Furthermore, some African countries are naturally poor.

Leaders of these countries have to seek external help to meet the basic needs of their citizens. This is one of the reasons Africa remains under control of the West.

In short, I think African people need to understand that their sorrow or suffering is a shared responsibility.
