Dear editor,
The burning of fishing nets around Lake Kivu sounds like fishermen will no longer have a way of survival.

However, this was a right move by the authorities.

Fishermen who use illegal fishing nets to catch young fish need to be stopped.

The continuity of this act will eventually deprive the lake of fish. With time, these very fishermen will no longer find fish to catch since they caught all the small fish, which would have otherwise grown.

Just burning the fishing nets is not enough. Responsible authorities should put in place policies that educate and sensitize the Lake Kivu fishermen on tactical and advantageous policies in the fishing profession.

Teaching fishing skills is paramount. This should involve the art of fishnet making- right measurements of size and appropriate type of thread and ropes to use, learning the fishing seasons and knowing the depth of the lake where particular kinds of fish are found.

This would be very helpful in creating educated fishermen in this profession. Fishing is good but the right procedures have to be taken.
