APR 25-20 Nyakabanda

KIE 11-42 Police

Gicumbi 48-8 NUR

François Ngarambe scored 16 goals as defending champions Gicumbi walloped National University of Rwanda 48-8 in the national handball championship at Gicumbi ground on Saturday.

Coach Ebenezel Murenzi’s men produced impressive performance in their quest to retain their championship.

The hosts had a miserable start as they were tightly marked by a very ambitious NUR side and were finally overpowered when captain Ngarambe produced vivacious performance in the second half of the game and singlehandedly scored 16.

It was Gicumbi’s first win of the season after drawing the first two games. The win moved the holders into fifth position in the nine-team league standing with five points, four behind leaders E. S Kigoma, who were not in action this weekend.

Murenzi said they were determined to retain the title despite making a slow start to the season.

"Our focus is to become the national handball champions once again. The players are in good health, well motivated and determined to give their best for the club to achieve its targets.

Elsewhere, APR jumped into second place after winning 25-20 against Nyakabanda at Kimisagara youth sports centre. The former champions have eight points from four games, while Police moved to fourth with six points after beating KIE 42-11 at the latter’s ground.
