THIS YEAR’S Genocide memorial volleyball tournament will be played on the weekend of June 7-8 at Amahoro indoor stadium, the Rwanda Volleyball Federation has said.
According to the federation president, Gustave Nkurunziza, the only problem is sponsorships which the federation is trying to secure.
"We expect to have many teams but we are still looking for sponsorship because we need to have a good tournament, better than the previous years,” said Nkurunziza.
All league teams from Rwanda men and women will take place in the event, while the federation plans to send invitations to Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, Tunisia and Congo Brazzaville to send in at least two clubs each.
The Federation is already in talks with the Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG) and Africa volleyball Governing Board to sponsor the two-day event.
The tournament is aimed at remembering the over 47 (known) members of the volleyball fraternity, including players, coaches, and administrators as well as other Rwandans, who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
INATEK are the men’s defending champions, while Kenya’s Pipeline are the holders of the women’s title.
