The Bishop of Shyira Diocese Rt. Rev. Dr Laurent Mbanda has called upon the youth to be agents of change by fighting Genocide ideology that devastated the country in 1994.

Mbanda made the call at Kigali Memorial while addressing about 200 former and current students of Sonrise School, who joined the rest of Rwandans to commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

"You should be happy that you live in times like these when Rwanda has good leadership. The current government stopped Genocide, brought peace and national unity—the kind of change this country needed. You have done very well to come and learn…Therefore be agents of change," Mbanda said.

The primate said that it is good for younger people to participate in national events because it helps them grasp the history of the country and equip themselves with the skills they need to take the country forward as "tomorrow’s leaders."

Also present was Bishop Emeritus of Shyira Diocese, John Rucyahana, who also asked the youth to be united, accountable and to think big as they contribute towards rebuilding the country.

Rucyahana, the founder of Sonrise School and the president of National Unity and Reconciliation Commission, also told the youth to always attend national events such as commemoration so as to learn the history of the country.

Speaking on behalf of the youth, Derrick Nkubito the president of Sonrise Old Students Association said that the association aims at providing a platform through which to share ideas that contribute to nation building.
