THE Confederation of African Football [Caf], president Issa Hayatou, is expected in Kigali on April 6 to join Rwandans for the 20th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi due on Monday, April 7.

Rwanda football federation (Ferwafa) secretary general Olivier Mulindahabi confirmed the development yesterday. Caf’s delegation will be I Rwanda for three days, he said.

Hayatou will be accompanied by his vice president and chairman of Chan commission Almamy Kabele Camara and Caf secretary general, Hicham El Amrani. 

During their visit, Hayatou and his entourage will also hold discussions with Ferwafa and government officials regarding preparations for the Chan 2016 tournament to be hosted by Rwanda.

Caf endorsed the country to host the 2016 Chan edition in January 2011 after it successfully organised two youth continental tournaments. They included the 2009 U-20 Africa youth championships and the U-17 championships the same year.

Besides Hayatou, other high profile African football officials expected in Rwanda for the  ‘Kwibuka 20’ events include; Cecafa president as well as FA presidents from Algeria, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Zambia.

Rwanda lost many players during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, which claimed the lives of more than a million people.
