Editor,
AS WE commemorate the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, I would like to talk about survival and self-reliance. My grandfather recounted to me how they were sent to Bugesera and how there were funerals among the families there nearly every day.
It was horrible. Tutsis were treated like wild animals but they miraculously managed to make it and survived.
I could not imagine how people survived in those forests with wild animals and tsetse flies all around them. It took too much courage and real determination to overcome the lethal challenges.
We, the current generation, should take a big lesson from that. If we are not united and work together towards self-reliance, we will never achieve our shared dreams.
I greet all those brave men and women in Bugesera who fought so hard to endure the humiliating and torturous conditions they were subjected to. You’re our role models. With the Government of National Unity, let us all continue to strive together to make self-reliance a reality.
