Editor, I want to thank the First Lady for such a comforting article. Two decades ago, Rwandans, especially women and children, went through hell. There are so many women who walk with fresh wounds in their hearts. They had children and lost them all yet they are unable to conceive again, many were raped but don’t want to reveal that to their husbands.

REFER TO the First Lady Jeannette Kagame’s article, "To all the women who bore the heaviest burden of our history” (The New Times, April 1).
I want to thank the First Lady for such a comforting article. Two decades ago, Rwandans, especially women and children, went through hell. There are so many women who walk with fresh wounds in their hearts. They had children and lost them all yet they are unable to conceive again, many were raped but don’t want to reveal that to their husbands.
Putting myself into their shoes, I would find peace in taking my own life – but they didn’t, and their hearts are focused to a better future. They know that they have someone (the First Lady) to care for them, shelter them, feed their children and pay for their school fees, to ensure that they get proper and swift medication, to facilitate them to access small loans from the bank so that they can start their own businesses…
Those women no longer live in misery. Even if it will take decades for their wounds to heal, at least they know that there’s someone who’s caring for them, their own friend, child, mother and sister. That’s the First Lady.
May God bless the First Lady in everything she does for this country.

WHAT AN incredibly gracious tribute to our mothers and sisters whose lives bore and still bear the brunt of the grimmest trial of all time.
The prose does contain a lot more than just words – there’s life in that article. I’m moved and I wish I was able to put it all in a poetry frame. God bless Rwanda, God bless our great leaders.
