Whereas things are not rosy back home, a couple of Rwanda women have managed to break through and are now plying their trade on the international scene. Here are some of them.

Happy Jacqueline Umurerwa

Happy Umurerwa is a Rwandan model based in Canada. As a Rwandan and African model, she believes Africa has what it takes to produce strong and stunning models. "I have always had a passion for modeling since I was a child but because where I come from people do not understand it, I faced resistance within my family” she says. To whoever is in modeling, her advice is, "Stick to what you want and you will one day get it.” The model urges upcoming models to be straightforward with their parents, instead of feeling like it’s a disgrace to tell them that their passion lies in modeling.

"Always respect yourself, your job and do not rush into anything.  Take time to find out what is good for you,” she further says. She adds that models should remember that they are a brand and they need to have a good reputation.

Gigh Francoise Indamutsa

This Rwandan model living in Belgium has received many accolades, like Best Charm Model of the world 2013, Best Model for Belgium 2013 (2nd) and Miss Supranational Rwanda 2012.

"There are always going to be challenges in life but as we grow up, we develop coping mechanisms: this applies to me too and of course to other people. Modeling can be stressful when it comes to high expectations. But we learn how to accept the outcome at all times. It can be grueling physically, psychologically and sometimes emotionally but working hard and listening to those who have more experience has proven to be more rewarding,’’ she says.
