Mugisha wins fifth round of Chess Open competition

FERNAND MUGISHA, a first year student at Kigali Institute of Science and Technology is the winner of the fifth round of the national chess open held at KIST Staff canteen last weekend.

The fifth round, which was organised by KIST Chess Club in collaboration with the Rwanda Chess Federation, attracted nine participants, all KIST students.

Mugisha, who came second in the previous round, finished with maximum five points and was followed by Claude Ngango, a fourth year student, and in third position was Pierre Roger Banahose, a third year student. Ngango won the fourth round.

For his effort, Mugisha walked away with Rwf15,000 as winner’s prize, while Ngango took Rwf10,000 and Rwf5,000 for third-placed Banahose.

"The number of participants is still very low, which is a big concern for us, but we shall look for other strategies to attract more players in competitions,” The vice president of the KIST Chess Club, Emmanuel Rebero said.
