TWENTY-ONE slots are available to local athletes who will be vying to represent Rwanda in different sports disciplines at this year’s Commonwealth Games due in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 3.

The Games Chef de Mission Serge Mwambali told Times Sport yesterday that the athletes will compete for the slots in the five sports disciplines, namely athletics, boxing, cycling, swimming and paralympics.

Eleven athletics will take part in athletics events-marathon [3], 10000m [4], 5000m 2] and 800m [1]; two boxers will be lined up to compete in the boxing light middleweight [64kg] and middleweight [75kg]; ten cyclists will compete in individual time trial [3] and team time trial [5] and mountain bike [2] races.

Swimming [50m freestyle] and paralympics [power lifting [75kg] will field one athlete each.

"We are going to do our best. Athletes are very committed and very soon we will start intensive training. The best athletes will be picked for Glasgow,” Mwambali added.

The long list of athletes being prepared for Glasgow totals 50 and they are set to start camp before the end of this month and hopefully by mid April, respective federations will be able to make their final selected teams of athletes by names.

Among athletes lined up for Glasgow, veteran long distance runner Dieudonne Disi is the only one, who has stepped up preparations in Kenya’s Iten training centre.

Meanwhile, judo has been snubbed for Glasgow Games because of its unavailability to host local or even participate in continental championships.
