LEAGUE CHAMPIONS Rayon Sport sailed through to the 1/8th round after thrashing second division outfit Sunrise 5-0 in the preliminary round of the 2014 Peace Cup tournament which started yesterday across the country.

Cedric Amissi snatched a hat trick after scoring in the 28th, 46th and 55th minute while skipper Fuadi Ndayisenga found the net twice in the 20th and 60th minute as the blues overpowered Eastern Province representatives.

Léon Uwimbabazi and Meddie Kagere failed to extend the lead as they wasted several goal scoring opportunities.

Elsewhere, Etincelles were the first Turbo King Football league club to exit the tournament after falling to Etoile de l’est 6-5 on spot kicks following a 1-all draw in normal regulation time.

Meanwhile, Gicumbi advanced to the next round following a 2-1 win over Unity; AS Muhanga beat Interforce 2-1 while Musanze saw off Gasabo with a 3-0 win.

Second division side Aspor registered a 4-2 win over Sorwathe with Kirehe pouncing Intare 3-1 to book a place in the 1/8th round.

Action continues today with seven-time Peace Cup champions APR taking on Akagera in Rwamagana. Coach Vincent Mashami is set to rest his first choice players, to give way for his second string side.

Sam Ssimbwa’s Police FC will entertain Bugesera at Stade de Kigali while Yaoundé Gilbert Kanyankole’s SC Kiyovu face a stiff challenge against Isonga at Kicukiro turf.

Espérance face host Vision at Mumena; Amagaju host United Stars in Muhanga early in the afternoon before Mukura take on Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle at the same venue later.

Sec Academy will battle Marines in Musanze while Pepiniere face a tough Espoir opponent on Thursday.

Defending champions AS Kigali will not face their opponents Rwamagana due to their engagement in Caf Confederation Cup where they will face Morocco’s Diffa El Jadida in the 1/8th round this weekend. The game has been pushed to a yet to be known date.

Sixteen clubs will advance to the 1/8th round and the winner in the finals will represent the country in the 2015 Caf Confederation Cup. The final will be played on July 4. Last year, AS Kigali beat AS Muhanga 3-0 to lift the title.
