The National Agricultural Export Board (NAEB), with support from Rwanda Correctional Services (RCS), are set to plant more than 4,000 fruit seedlings in Kavumu Cell, Mageragera Sector in Nyarugenge District to boost the fruit industry.

More than 2,000 avocado and mango seedlings were on Saturday planted on 10 hectares of land in Mageragera during a special community work. 

The drive is aimed at boosting fruit production for both local and international market.

Amb. Bill Kayonga, the director-general of NAEB, said the activity was in line with the Ministry of Local government’s directive asking government organs to engage is nation-building projects that contribute to economic development.

"All government agencies have engaged in activities that will impact on economic development, but NAEB seeks to further engage in a project that will contribute to people’s diet, and perhaps result into surplus production for international market,” he said.

Mary Gahonzire, deputy commissioner general of RCS, said the initiative will support agricultural growth and encourage commercial production that would boost the economy.

Nyarugenge deputy mayor in charge of economic affairs Félicien Kagisha said the initiative would increase the area’s agriculture production.
