Rice growers co-operative (Cooproriz) in Ntende, Rugarama Sector, Gatsibo District has unveiled a modern conference hall that will be used for business meetings, weddings and other activities in the area.
The conference facility was commissioned this week by the Mayor of Gatsibo, Ambrose Ruboneza.
Speaking at the function, Ruboneza commended the rice farmers for coming up with such a huge investment.
The state-of-the-art investment cost the farmers Rwf59.2 million and is one of its kind in Gatsibo District.
"We appreciate your contribution towards building a dignified and prosperous Rwanda,” he told the rice growers.
The mayor noted that Cooproriz is one of the major farmer’s organisations in the area that are working tirelessly to eradicate poverty and increase food security.
The rice growers’ association of Ntende represents more than 3,428 members, and supports growers on issues affecting the viability of their business and communities.
"We thank our partners who made this happen. The conference hall will contribute to the development of our association,” said Jean Damascene Rwamwaga, the president of Cooproriz.
He noted that the union produces more than 2,000 tonnes of rice every season on 480 hectares of land but was increasing the area of cultivation to 900 hectares. The cooperative started in 2003 with 560 members but it has now grown to 3428 members.
