AFTER beating AS Muhanga 1-0 to climb to third place, AS Kigali head coach Andre Gasambungo believes his side is still in the race for the Turbo King Football league title.
AS Kigali got the winning goal through David Niyobanyita in the 27th minute as they dominated relegation bound AS Muhanga on Thursday at Stade de Muhanga.
The win helped last season’s Peace Cup winners to close the gap on leader APR albeit with a game in hand against fifth-placed Police FC scheduled for tomorrow at Stade de Kigali.
"We won the game in which we were not in our best shape because of fatigue. And we believe we can continue to push the two teams above us in the race for the title. We are not so far behind, but it means we must win all our remaining (seven) matches and see where we will finish,” Gasambungo, whose team is also through to the second round of the Caf Confederation Cup, said after Thursday’s win.
With his team lying six points behind second-place and reigning champions Rayon Sports, Gasambungo is adamant to concede that the race is between the top two teams on the table.
"It may look as though the race is between the top two, but I don’t see it that way. If we keep winning our games and our rivals lose a couple of matches between now and end of the season, the picture can easily change. That is why I say we are still very much in the race, we will fight until the end,” he vowed.
However, AS Muhanga coach Ali Bizimungu, whose team dominated the second half, against AS Kigali said the City of Kigali side was lucky to take all three points.
"We dominated the whole game but we didn’t manage to score a single goal. But we can look on the positive side and move on to the next match, which is equally important and won’t be easy,” said the former Rayon Sports coach.
AS Muhanga, who are in eleventh position with 14 points, four adrift of bottom side Amagaju, take on fourth-placed Espoir FC on Sunday at the latter’s fortress in Kamarampaka stadium.
