A total of 74 police officers have retired from the Rwanda National Police (RNP).

Among those who have retired are Commissioner of Police (CP), Steven Balinda, and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Yoweri Ndahiro.

While speaking at the send-off ceremony  for the retired officers at the RNP headquarters in Kacyiru on Wednesday , the Minister for Internal Security, Sheikh Musa Fazil Harelimana commended the officers for their service to the nation.

"You put your lives on the line to liberate your country even when your comrades were dying in the the line of duty. You did your best to build a credible Police Force that is globally respected. You are, therefore, still part of a winning team and in your new life, remember to continue loving and serving your nation,” the minister said.

Harelimana urged the retirees not to put to waste their experience but use it to  support their respective communities. He also pledged government’s continued support.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Emmanuel K. Gasana, described the  retirees as "patriotic comrades” who never abandoned their nation when they were needed most, adding that their dedicated service to the Force was not in vain.

He urged them to maintain discipline and be ready to serve the country whenever necessary.

CP Balinda, who spoke on behalf of the retired officers, thanked the country and the RNP for the support rendered to them in various ways.

"We are proud to start a new life with such respect from colleagues and country. We are happy to have played a part in building a credible Rwanda National Police and we will be available to serve our country when need arises,” CP Balinda                     said.

He urged the officers still in service to remain patriotic and help build a professionalised force as well as  ensure sustainable peace in the country.
