Government on Tuesday recognised teachers who are doing exceptional work. The 80 outstanding teachers from all the 30 districts in the country were given laptops and Internet modems as a token of appreciation for their exemplary and selfless service by Rwanda Education Board (Reb).
This is a commendable move on the part of the Government as it will encourage hard work and create healthy competition among teachers.
It will also improve service delivery in the education sector. The annual awards will also inspire innovation among teachers to ensure improved teaching practises in schools across the country.
Teaching is one of those jobs that most people despise. REB deserves a pat on the back for this noble gesture that will definitely motivate the unsung heroes and change the teaching dynamics going forward.
After all, who doesn’t want to be a recipient of such a noble honour?
However, as we celebrate with the 80 teachers who have stood out from the crowd, Reb should remember to tighten its school inspection and monitoring as some teachers might try to use unhealthy means to ‘shine’ in the annual accolades.
It’s natural that the honours will create more competition, which is why Reb must become more vigilant to ensure that those selected are deserving of the national recognition.
It is important for Reb to also improve the working conditions of the classroom teachers to enable them work comfortably with high morale.
To the awardees, well done, and keep up your selfless and inspirational service to the nation.
