AS Kigali continued to defy odds and progressed to the second round of the Caf Confederation Cup after eliminating Al Ahly Shendi of Sudan 5-4 on penalties in Khartoum last evening.

Rwanda’s Peace Cup winners, who won the first leg 1-0 in Kigali last weekend, lost the second leg tie by the same score to force the game into penalty kicks.

After a goalless first half, the home side dominated the second period and almost scored on two occasions, only for AS Kigali goalkeeper Emery Nvuyekure to come to the rescue with big saves to keep his team in the game and the competition.

However, with time running out and the game destined to end in a goalless draw, Ahly Shendi got the match winning goal in the stoppage time through substitute Ahmed Adil from a corner kick. But the Rwandan side prevailed in the spot kicks.

Andre Gasambungo’s team will next face the winner between Gamtel of Gambia and Morocco’s Difaâ El Jadidi, who meet today in their second leg clash in Morocco. The North African side leads 2-0 from the first leg.

It’s the first time that a Rwandan club has reached the second round of Africa’s second biggest club competition.

To reach the first round, AS Kigali, who are playing in this competition for the second time since making their debut in 2002, eliminated Burundian side Academie Tchite 2-1 on goal aggregate.

The City of Kigali-sponsored side won the first leg 1-0 in Kigali and drew 1-1 in the second leg in Bujumbura.
