The head of women football in the Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) Félicité Rwamalika has admitted that She-Amavubi victory over Kenya in the first round of qualifiers of 2014 African Women’s Championships came as a surprise.

Rwanda will face Nigeria’s Super Falcons in the next round in May and the winner will qualify for the finals scheduled for October 15 to 25 in Namibia. Nigeria have won seven African championships.

"Our girls are making us proud, at first we never imagined they can stand a chance against an experienced team like Kenya, but what they did proved their ability and determination to register more milestones,” Rwemalika told Times Sport on Monday.

Rwemalika added, "But it’s not over, now the attention turns to the next round against Nigeria. Ferwafa will make sure the team gets everything they need to be in the best possible position to qualify for the finals.”

Grace Nyinawumuntu’s team lost 2-1 to Kenya in the second leg match played on Sunday at Kenyatta stadium in Machakos but progressed to the next round on the away-goals rule, having won the first leg 1-0 in Kigali two weeks ago.

Jackie Ogol and Neddy Otieno were on target for the more experienced Kenya team, while Sophie Niyomugaba netted the all-important away goal for She-Amavubi.

The Rwandan delegation, led by Rwemalika, landed at the Kigali international Airport from Nairobi on Monday at 11:30am.
