RWANDA NATIONAL women team will be looking to progress to the next round of the 2014 Africa Women’s Championships qualifiers when they face Kenya in the preliminary round second leg this afternoon at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
With a 1-0 first leg win in Kigali courtesy of Alice Niyoyita, Grace Nyinawumuntu’s side need a win or a draw of any sort to go through to the next stage.
"We are ready for the contest. We need to take the game to the Kenyans because any slight mistake would cost us a place in the next round,” Nyinawumuntu told Sunday Sport by telephone from Kenya.
Her counterpart Justin Okiring said his side is confident of overturning the first leg result, "We lost to a good side in the first leg but the result isn’t that big. It is possible to overturn that result and reach the next round.”
Elsewhere, in Accra, Ghana will be eyeing a double over Burkina Faso after a 3-0 win in Ouagadougou. The Black Queens are highly favoured after thumping the Burkinabes at their backyard two weeks ago.
On Friday, Twiga Stars of Tanzania were eliminated find after playing a 1-all draw against Zambia to bow out 3-2 on aggregate. Cote d’Ivoire defeated Mali 1-0 to advance 5-0 on aggregate to the next round.
The winners will join African champions, Equatorial Guinea, South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Comoros and Senegal for the next round.
Seven teams will emerge from the qualifiers to join hosts Namibia for the final tournament from 11-24 October, also a qualifier for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada next year.
