Rayon Sports volleyball club head coach Fidele Nyirimana ‘Fidjo’ will be looking to guide the new entrants to the league title at the first time of asking when the new season starts today at different venues.
Rayon begin their campaign in Pool Four in which they will play round-robin matches against hosts, Lycee de Nyanza and Christ Roi de Nyanza.
Nyirimana, who led National University of Rwanda to last year’s title, believes his new team has the potential to win the title in their debut season.
He said, "We want to win league and the only way to put ourselves in a good position to achieve that is to prepare well and make good signings, which we have done.”
"We are focusing on winning the league because we have good players. This is my objective ahead of the new season. Winning the league in our first season will do us a world of good as we bid to be the best team in the country and the region. I believe we have a team good enough to compete favourably against anyone,” stated the former national team player.
Rayon Sports has signed some of the top players in the country including Eric Nsabimana, Eugène Tuyishime, Guillaume Irakarama, Jean Luc Mbonyuwontuma, Emile Karera and Evode Munyandinda.
Others are; Fred Musoni, Alexis Ntakirutimana, Athanase Bigirimana, Vincent Dusabimana (Gasongo) and last season’s league MVP Olivier Ntagengwa.
In matches, in Pool One, defending champions University of Rwanda-Huye Campus will host newcomers Kirehe and St Joseph, while in Pool Two, APR will be hoping to win their first games against Ngororero and Rusumo High School.
In Pool Three, INATEK host Petit Seminaire Virgo Fideris de Karubanda and Group Scoraile Officielle de Butare, in Pool Five, former champions Kigali Volleyball Club will start against Umubano Blues Tigers and University of Rwanda -College Of Education.
