Groupe Scolaire Apred Ndera, a mixed secondary school based in Ndera Sector of Gasabo district, has launched a club aimed at promoting a girl child’s capability to engage in leadership.

The club dubbed Girl with A Mission (GWAM) was spearheaded by six Senior Six students and it’s open for all students.

Among others, the club also aims at imparting confidence in girls to take up leadership positions, sensitising them about  their freedom of speech, reducing the rate of school drops outs as well as educating girls about their capabilities in various fields.

Speaking during the first club workshop that took place at school, Susan Kayisanabo, the president of the club, said the club will not only benefit students but also the girl-child especially in the rural areas.

"The club has started here but we have a plan of ensuring that it benefits girls in other schools, urban centres and rural areas,” Kayisanabo said.

During the workshop, members had an interactive discussion on a wide range of issues such as good leadership and early pregnances.

These pregnancies, participants said, deny girls a chance to achieve their dreams in life yet their boyfriends are never affected.

Kayisanabo says she is confident the activities the club will engage in will help students and other girls to resist those who persuade them into actions that finally ruin their education and future.

Another member, Phiona Mulisa said through school management, the club will create relations and partnerships with other schools to ensure that many girls benefit from the initiative.

She explained that the inferiority complex of some girls drive them into making wrong decisions.

Ian Ayebare, a teacher, said the school will give the club all the support it needs.
