A Rwandan student in India was murdered by a suspected racist gang, The New Times has learnt.
This newspaper has since established the deceased as a one Elisephan, who was a student at the Karnataka University in the state of Karnataka.
He was killed last week, according to sources in India.
Amb. Ernest Rwamucyo, Rwanda’s envoy to India, confirmed the incident this morning.
"We are saddened by this death. The High Commission is working with authorities to confirm identity and circumstances of the death,” Rwamucyo said in a tweet.
He said investigation into the case is underway.
It is suspected that the Rwandan student was stalked by a gang of racists from the same school who beat him to death and then dumped his body into a nearby river, according to sources.
Although details are still murky, sources say that the crime, which happened more than five days ago, was initially concealed, even from the Rwandan High Commission.
India has been in the news in recent years over racist attacks on foreigners and gang rape cases.
