The General Assembly of the Consultative Forum for Political Parties, on Thursday, elected Sheikh Musa Fazil Harelimana as its spokesperson, effectively making him the head of the body for the next six months.

Harelimana, who is the head of the Ideal Democratic Party (PDI), will be deputised by Scolastique Nyiramajyambere from the Social Party-Imberakuri.

The two replaced Agnes Mukabaranga, from the Centrist Democratic Party (PDC), and Sylvie Mpongera, from Rwanda Socialist Party (PSR). Harelimana, who is also the Minister of Internal Security, was the sole candidate for the  rotating position and was unanimously elected.

Nyiramajyambere, who did not attend the assembly was elected with 35 votes out of 38  delegates. She is the executive secretary of her party. The two officials assumed their duties immediately.

"This term is quite different from others. We will be marking 20 years of the Genocide against the Tutsi and the liberation of our country,” said Harelimana.

During the same meeting, a new code of conduct was adopted.

"It does not mean that the old code had  problems. It is simply because the organic law governing political organisations and politicians has been amended. Thus, we wanted to harmonise the forum’s code of conduct with the new law,” Harelimana said.
