ALL ROADS this weekend lead to Huye District for the annual Father Emmanuel Kayumba memorial volleyball tournament at Group Scolaire de Butare courts. The two-day tournament, running Saturday and Sunday has attracted 10 schools.
According to Father Celestin Rwirangira, the headmaster of Group Scolaire de Butare, the annual tournament will attract all 10 men’s league teams and three women’s teams.
The men’s teams include; APR, National University of Rwanda, Nyanza, Groupe Scolaire de Butare, Petit Seminaire de Karubanda, Christ Roi de Nyanza, Lycee de Nyanza, Rayon Sports, Blue Tigers and INATEK will square up for the men’s title.
Last year U21 national team won the tournament after beating APR 3-0 in the final.
The women teams that have confirmed their participation are; Ruhango, Notre Dame de La Providence, Rwanda Revenue Authorit. Father Rwirangira said the tournament is expected to be competitive.
The tournament is organized in memory of the late Father Kayumba.
Father Kayumba, who passed away in 2009, was instrumental in the growth of volleyball in Group Scolaire de Butare.
The school has produced some of Rwanda’s best players like Flavien Ndamukunda, Guillaume Irakarama (Rayon Sports), Bonnie Mutabazi (APR), Richard Muhirwa, Jules Singiza and Joseph Ndahiro (KVC), among others.
