Police in Rwamagana District has arrested a 22-year-old woman for allegedly dumping her new born baby boy in a pit-latrine.

The baby was discovered by police and rushed to Rwamagana Hospital where he is in a critical but stable condition.

Police said the mother, name withheld was arrested on Monday, following a tip-off by residents.

Article 143 of the penal code stipulates that the crime attracts life imprisonment. Eastern Region Police spokesperson, Senior Superintendant Benoit Nsengiyumva said the suspect claimed she was impregnated and abandoned by one Kabuje Uwingabiye, who lives in Kigabiro sector.

The suspect accepted the crime of dumping the two-day old baby in latrine and sought forgiveness.

She said she did it after the man responsible abandoned her.

"I wasn’t using my senses when I committed the crime. I am a product of a single mother, who couldn’t support the children she had. I was forced to live with maternal relatives, who forced me into marriage at a tender age-just at 16 years,”

The woman said she was mistreated by husband.
