Police in Nyamasheke District have arrested eight people suspected to be involved in various theft-related crimes in the area, including stealing motorcycles.

The suspects, who are currently detained at Ruharambuga Police Station, were arrested in separate operations in Nyamasheke and Rusizi districts on Monday.

Police also recovered a motorcycle registration number RB 058T, belonging to Strive Foundation, which had been stolen from Mwezi parish in Nyamasheke on Sunday night.

Three of the suspects were arrested in Rusizi where they were trying to sell the recovered motorcycle.

Police in Rusizi said they arrested the trio in Kamembe Sector as they were trying to sell the stolen motorcycle, after they received credible information from members of the public.

Among those arrested include security guards, who are said to be conniving with  thieves to steal goods in premises under their guard.

Supt. Jules Rutayisire, Nyamasheke District Police Commander, appealed to institutions to always hire guards from recognised private security firms to avoid such cases.

He hailed the public for their continued cooperation in providing information, which he said in most cases leads to the arrest of wrongdoers.
