Rwanda’s Cycling governing body (FERWACY) president Abdallah Murenzi, has resigned, The New Times has learnt.
Murenzi is under investigation, but not detained, on suspicion of being an accomplice on charges of making decisions based on favouritism, friendship acquaintances, or nepotism, as well as forgery, falsification, and use of forged documents to which federation Secretary General Benoit Munyankindi is suspected to have engaged in before he was apprehended and detained for further investigation.
Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) spokesperson Thierry Murangira told The New Times that he "knew about Munyankindi’s actions and did not act.”
Meanwhile, Alphonse Nkuranga, the federation’s Executive Director has also resigned from his position and has already made the hand over according to a reliable source from the federation.
"It is true that Murenzi and Nkuranga have resigned. They have both submitted their letters of resignation. Nkuranga has already done the handover,” a source told The New Times.
Murenzi steps down after four years in office. He first took over the office in an interim role in 2019 replacing Aimable Bayingana who also resigned from the top position.
The former Rayon Sports president and Nyanza District Mayor was elected as FERWACY president in 2021 on a four-year term which would run until 2026.
