Youth in Kigali have committed to helping police in the fight against crimes such as drug abuse and corruption.

The youth, under their umbrella association, Rwanda Youth Organisation for Sustainable Development (RYOSD), made the resolve during a meeting with security organs on Sunday in Kicukiro District.

Richard Hategekimana, RYOSD president, said: "Our organisation implements what we commit ourselves to do and strive to succeed despite the challenges.”

Hategekimana said they will sensitise   other youth about the dangers of drug abuse and encourage self-employment.

Rebecca Dusenge, a member from Gasabo, said she was pleased to work with security organisations to fight crime. The organisation comprises over 6,000  members countrywide.

The Commissioner for Public Relations and Community Policing, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Damas Gatare, said though drug abuse has decreased tremendously, many youth still abuse drugs.

 He said there was need to fight the vice so as to secure the future of the Rwandan youth.

Gatare said drug abuse leads to, among others, unwanted pregnancies and school drop-outs.
