She Amavubi, the national women’s football team, have been reduced from 35 to 24 players as head coach Grace Nyinawumuntu inches closer to getting the final 18-member squad which will face Kenya in the first round of the 2014 Caf Africa Women’s Championships.
The Kenya game is slated next weekend in Kigali, with the second leg due in Nairobi seven days later.
The race to the event in Namibia will see Rwanda take on Kenya for the very first time in history of women football.
AS Kigali dominate the provisional squad with fifteen players.
She Amavubi will face Dream Academy on Sunday in a build-up match.
Twenty-five teams will vie for seven places that are up for grabs, with Namibia guaranteed of participation since they are the hosts.
The finals will run from October 11-25.
Nyinawumuntu, 31, expressed optimism that her team will overcome the Kenya hurdle.
The winner between the two sides will take on the winner in the Nigeria-Sierra Leone fixture.
After this weekend’s friendly, the team will play two more buildup games, against Kicukiro-based U17 Dream team on Sunday at Amahoro stadium, and then AS Kigali men’s junior team on Tuesday at Stade de Kigali.
